Kollam formerly known as Dutch Quilon, lies near Thiruvananthpuram Airport. Its one of the most beautiful place on earth in the monsoon season, but sadly most of the travellers avoid this season. It rains heavily here, but this gateway of Backwaters has its natural beauty blossoming in the winters. Apart from the rainy season, its the winters which makes this place feel like heaven. Tusami of December 2004 did effect this place and its neighborhood, still its back and radiant as ever.

Kollam BackwatersThe Place :
Kollam lies between the eight cornered Ashtamudi and the Lakshadweep Sea, at the southern extremity of a network of backwaters. Most of the sight seeing places in Kollam are within the radius of 8 - 10kms. The place is famous for its colonial Churches just like the Colonial Cousins and its backwaters. As you move along the coast line in the houseboats you will get to see some of the churches of Kollam. Other than these Churches there is the Thirumullavaram beach, Nahavishnu Temple. Thevally Palace, Neendakara which hold attraction for the tourist. Apart from these the Ashtamudi Backwaters are also famous. It here in these waters that the Kettuvulumns or the houseboats row along the coast line.

The backwater Cruise from Kollam will take you across the Ashthamundi River from where you will be able to see the little villages on the coastal line of Kerala. You will children running, waving and playing across the Coast. fisherman taking their fish, and women hurrying to work While on the houseboat you can catch fish, take a dip in the backwaters or swim in them or stop the houseboat in the middle of the backwater to take pictures of the scenery around. You can see the beautiful Ashtamudi Lake and enjoy the moonlit night. You will also get to see a number of temples, churches and mosques which have different images in the night and morning.

Some of the one day houseboats trips are very famous like the Kayal Pradikshana Cruise which takes you along Munroe Island, formed by the Ashtamudi and Kallada River. This one day trip takes Rs 500 per individual; children below 12 years are not ticketed. Another is the Sayanathum Sunset Cruise which is a half day cruise and takes Rs 100 per individual. But both of the cruise do not include night stay in the houseboat.

The Houseboat

Houseboats of Kerala are the luxury in which you will move on the backwaters. These are the homes rowing from one destination to another fully equipped with all the comforts of a household. There are the one bedded accommodation Houseboats. The one bedded houseboat has a living cum dining room and a bedroom with attached bathroom. In this type of Houseboat the lining cum dining room is larger than the bedroom. There is a separate Kitchens. It also has a sundeck for you to relax the ripples of the backwaters and the life of Kerala Villages

With separate accommodation for the Crew, it is perfect for a couple. The crew includes the Captain and the Chef. This type of boat are also perfect for Honeymooners. A simple Houseboat cruise for two without Air Conditioned rooms would cost around 10,000 for one and half day trip.

  • The fare includes living in houseboats for the stipulated time, with meals and sight-seeing.
  • Sight-seeing of near by villages will be in Air Conditioned coaches but it needs to be checked as there is a difference between A/c and Non A/C coaches fare.
  • The food prepared in the Kitchen of the Houseboat will be South Indian Delicacies. If you are purely vegetarian then you need to tell at the time of booking the Houseboats. Continental food can also be prepared but the variety will be limited.
  • Try to keep cotton clothes or Chiffon. The weather of Kerala is usually damp, so lighter the cloths, the better you will feel.
  • Keep your own mosquito repellent ointment as there can be mosquitoes around the water.
  • If you require some basic First Aid, ask the crew. The houseboats have the first aid box. If you suffer from some ailment, tell it to the crew, so that if need arises, they can help.
  • Though the houseboats run throughout the year, its better to avoid the monsoon season of July - August. In these months the Captains avoid to move their houseboats.
  • In Kerala the rain drains on its own at any point of time . So its better to keep an umbrella handy.
  • The Houseboat tour begins from a particular place but it is not important that the tour ends at that particular place. You can also end your tour in some other place as per your ease. For this you will have to ask for One Way Houseboat Tour.
