Also known as Harbor of Honesty, there is a very interesting legend attached. Once upon a time, two Arab Prince from Muskeeyat set out in search of a place to establish trade links. At each port where the royal yacht moored, they left behind three jars of date pickle for safekeeping, saying they would collect it on their way back. On their return, a few months later , they went to each of the places to reclaim their jars. The jars were full of dates but as the princes had filled one of them with gold coins, the third one was not to be found. Lastly, they reached a very remote port where they had dropped in earlier. To their surprise, it was the only place where they could find their gold coins intact. Impressed, the Princes dropped their anchor and till today the island is known as Harbor of Honesty.

It is the same beach where Vasco Di Gama landed in 1498. Previously known as Calicut, Kozhikode is a important sceneric destination. For the Britishers, it was an important trading port.

The Houseboat

Some of the Houseboats known as Soma Houseboats are just like mini cottages, only that they are mobile. Most of them have two cabins, including a sit out, sundeck, bedroom and a private bath. Interior of the Soma Houseboats are build of wooden panels. The houseboats have a crew of two to three people which include the Chef, the Captain of the Boat and the Assistant. Once on the Houseboat you can enjoy the soft breeze while sipping tea or coffee. There are halts in between the cruise for sight-seeing. In these breaks you can pick a bottle of toddy or the breeze or coconut water as per your taste. You can also try climbing a Coconut tree with assistance but only at your own risk.

The food prepared on the deck will be purely south Indian which would include non - vegetarian food. However, if you need to have only vegetarian food or are looking for Continental food, then you will have to tell it at the time of booking of the houseboat cruise. Any changes in the Menu while on the deck will not be entertained.

  • The fare includes living in houseboats for the stipulated time, with meals and sight-seeing. Anything extra than this will incur extra charges.
  • Sight-seeing of near by villages will be in Air Conditioned coaches. If you do not need Air Conditioned coaches then you have to tell in advance as Air Condition coaches attract extra charges.
  • The food prepared in the Kitchen of the Houseboat will be South Indian Delicacies. If you are purely vegetarian then you need to tell at the time of booking the Houseboats. Continental food can also be prepared but the variety will be limited.
  • Try to keep cotton clothes or Chiffon. The weather of Kerala is usually damp, so lighter the cloths, the better you will feel.
  • Keep your own mosquito repellent ointment as there can be mosquitoes around the water.
  • If you require some basic First Aid, ask the crew. The houseboats have the first aid box. If you suffer from some ailment, tell it to the crew, so that if need arises, they can help.
  • Though the houseboats run throughout the year, its better to avoid the monsoon season of July - August. In these months the Captains avoid to move their houseboats.
  • In Kerala the rain drains on its own at any point of time . So its better to keep an umbrella handy.
  • The Houseboat tour begins from a particular place but it is not important that the tour ends at that particular place. You can also end your tour in some other place as per your ease. For this you will have to ask for One Way HouseBoat Tour.
